Buffalo Grass or Buffalograss

Buffalo Grass is a native North American grass. It grows to only 4 inches, so it can go without mowing. It has fine-textured gray-green blades that create a nice looking but not manicured lawn. It does best in the Plains States east of the Rockies. It stays attractive from spring until frost. From fall to winter it goes dormant and turns a pale straw color. It is not fussy about soil and does well in clay.

Do not fertilize in spring and fall. Use fertilizers in June and July. When there is no green left in the grass, it is a good time to treat for weeds.

Planted typically with plugs. 3-5 months will cover similar to sod.

Local jurisdictions are encouraging the use of Buffalo Grass because it is environmentally friendly. It requires little mowing (thus reduces gas usage) and it requires less water than other sods.

There are several types of Buffalo Grass:

- Legacy (widest range of area and is more cold hearty)

- Prestige (University of Nebraska), more suited to warmer areas of US.

- UC Verde
